The European Union has set an ambitious goal to increase the share of renewable energy sources from 8.5% in 2005 to 20% of the total energy consumption in the EU by 2020. This increase the share of renewable energy sources is a necessary contribution to the struggle with global climate change and a major step towards greater energy independence of the Union, which is also a very important long-term goal for the EU member states.
